Oulu Nomadic Monument
2024- ongoing
Congratulations! For the next month you are the custodian of the Oulu Nomadic Monument. Take it home and care for it in your own home. After one month has passed, you must choose someone else to be the next custodian and give them the sculpture. They in turn will look after the sculpture in their home, until it is their turn to choose another custodian.
The Oulu Nomadic Monument is a collectively owned public sculpture that tours private homes in Oulu. It is an artwork by James Prevett that emerged from a workshop in 2024 with year two school children from Oulu International School in collaboration with the Oulu Art Museum. During the workshop, the children made sculptures around their memories of home out of their own domestic rubbish. James then made three bronze sculptures based on the children’s sculptures, of which the children collective chose one to become the Oulu Nomadic Monument. All three monuments were on display in the Den exhibition at Oulu Art Museum, 15.11.2024 -2.3.2025.
You can use the sculpture as you like in your own home. It is made of bronze so the more you touch it the faster its surface will become dull. The only rule is that you must care for the sculpture, and when it is time, choose another custodian who will honour this agreement. We hope that the sculpture continues to tour around Oulu for years to come.
The sculpture comes in a box with these instructions. When it is time for the monument to move on, please put it back in the box with these instructions and give it to the next custodian.
We would also like you to send us a photo of it inside your home once it finds its place. Please send as good a resolution photograph as you can of the Monument in your home to artist James Prevett. The photos will be added to a growing archive of all the places the sculpture has been.

2022- ongoing
Congratulations! For the next month you are the custodian of Malmö Monument # 01 (01-05). After one month has past, you must choose somebody else to be the next custodian and give them the sculpture. They in turn will look after the sculpture in their home, until it is their turn to choose another custodian.
The Malmö Monument is a series of five small peripatetic, or nomadic public sculptures moving around people’s homes in Malmö. Each sculpture is a copy of an original that was made collectively during a workshop in May 2022. Each one is slightly different. You can use the sculpture as you like in your own home. The only rule is the you must care for the sculpture, and when it is time, to choose another custodian who will honour this agreement to care for the sculpture, and then pass it on. We hope that the sculpture continues to tour around Malmö for years to come as a collectively owned public sculpture.
